The Matachines likely arrived to the Carnu\u00e9 Land Grant by way of\nIsleta Pueblo and Sandia Pueblo, where many early San Antonio families have\nmatriarchal lines through inter-marriage. The dance is primarily danced in\nPueblo native communities in New Mexico, but is also practiced in communities\nsuch as Alcalde, Bernalillo, El Rancho, and Tortugas (Rodr\u00edguez, 2009). The\nleadership of the Matachines is known at the monarcha, representative the Aztec\nking Montezuma, and is responsible for organizing practice, selecting danzantes\n(dancers) and mentoring and training youth from the community into the matach\u00edn\nsociety. Historically, there was one monarcha from San Antonio de Carnu\u00e9, but\nlater there were two, with a leader in Carnuel. Before WWII, only men were\nallowed to be danzantes; however, during WWII there were a lack of male dancers\nin the community and women ensured that the ritual performances continued. Los\nmatachines serves as an initial training and mentoring of the youth of the\ncommunity into the querencia of Carnu\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicohistory.org\/people\/the-matachines-dance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Click here to read the State Historian article describing this widespread and wonderful tradition.
